Being A Boudoir Photographer And A Man: The Things To Know About It

 In For Women

Boudoir Photographer Doesn’t Just Mean Woman Boudoir Photographer

In this post I will explore a topic that is often discussed while chatting about Boudoir: being a male boudoir photographer. Today I will not talk about shooting portraits, wedding or any other style of photography, but I will concentrate on the Boudoir part, the one we worked on as London Boudoir Photography before changing its name. Fabiana and I are well aware that there are a lot of “female boudoir studio only” both in London and around the world. Their take is that having an all-female team is more relaxing and comfortable for women. On the contrary we focus our attention on a couple of different points

  • Faby and Carlo are a solid couple who do not take themselves too seriously. We like the chemistry between us and this is something that transpires with each and every of our customers. We like to chat and to be ourselves, truly. Boudoir should not be something scary and we don’t make it such.
  • Men and women have different perspectives. A woman boudoir photographer will always have a different view from a man boudoir photographer. In reality this applies to every style of photography, but when it comes down to photographing intimate portraits the differences are even more noticeable. In our opinion being able to photograph the same moment with two different vision is a big plus

What it is also an underestimated point is that it is the single boudoir photographer to define not only his/her style, but his/her approach and trustworthiness. Do you want to know who is Carlo the boudoir photographer? Welcome to my world!

My View On Being A Male Boudoir Photographer

I have to admit that I rarely took into account the fact that I am a male boudoir photographer. You can say I have been naive about this, but I have always seen the female forms as part of an overall moment. The way I see a woman’s face, body or even soul is not in regards to how beautiful she might look, but how beautiful I can make her look in my images. When I started as street photographer I captured the moment and the people that were “telling” me something. I have always been a natural at this, I was simply attracted by some details and I learned how to capture that decisive moment. Faby and I then moved towards the Fashion and Editorial world and through models I learned how to pose them, how to create the right environment for that “something“, that story to happen again. This time it was more about the essence of the women we were photographing more than an instant candidly captured. I then become a boudoir photographer and I did not ask myself if this was an issue seen that I was photographing women in their underwear. I never questioned it because I almost always had Fabiana at my side, but more than that because I have always treated women, from our first phone call to the last click in the studio, with something that is paramount for every boudoir photographer, male or female: professionalism. When I look at a woman, she is my subject, I want to flatter her curves, I want to show the beauty she cannot necessarily see. When I look at a woman I think how I can create the photo she will fall in love with. Had I had the same passion for showing a pear or a tree how beautiful they are, it would have made no difference in my approach. The difference is that too many times women do not realise how beautiful they really are: this is why I am a boudoir photographer. I am really proud of the man I am, I am proud of the photographer I am. This is because one of the most important thing for me is to be able to look at myself in the mirror every night knowing that I am the honest person I want to be.

Professionalism Is The Key

As I said already, my perspective on the matter is that it does not really matter if you are a male or a female: you should always be professional in your behaviour. If I had to give you a piece of advice on how to look for your boudoir photographer, I would indeed tell you about the style you want to have and about the packages you want to invest in, but I would certainly tell you to talk to them before your shoot. A boudoir photographer will photograph you intimately, therefore it is your right to know who he or she is, and you should always be sure of his or her professionalism.

A Male Boudoir Photographer Sees Beauty Differently

One of the things we have discovered through time is that we see things differently. Fabiana generally captures more gentle images, focusing on an external eye spying on the beauty of a woman, while my photos are more direct, involving more eye contact. Men and women are different in the way they feel, in the way they express themselves and also in the way they photograph. The style of “Faby and Carlo” is so unique for this as well: because we can photograph separately or together, providing a variety that does not consist only of poses, but of styles as well.
In my photos I have always focussed on lines that lead to the face of my subject, to her eyes mainly. I want to tell a story with my images, I want involvement. My personal approach is slightly more of impact than Fabiana’s, while hers has the subtlety so much needed in a dreamy shoot. Not for nothing our images speak to both a male and female audience.

The Most Frequently Asked Question For Fabiana

Many people asked Fabiana if she is not jealous of me shooting boudoir (or even nude). The truth is that Fabiana knows how much professional I am when I work, how hard I work to make sure to capture the right image for each and every customer we photograph.
“Would you be jealous if your husband was a gynaecologist?” she asked to one of our customers who asked the same question “he is a professional photographer”
Another truth is that we have shoot shoulder to shoulder for so long that we know exactly what is going on in each other’s mind when we have our cameras in our hands. She knows that what I focus on, she knows that even when I see a naked body in front of me I care about its lines, its shape and how they will look at their best in a photo.

And the last thing I want to personally add is simple: for how much I love showing every woman how beautiful she is, there is only one woman I truly Love: Fabiana.
